Our hosts, Atul Singh and Glenn Carle, dive deep into a discussion about democracy in this episode of The Dialectic. In this podcast, our hotsts share their unique perspectives on issues of global significance. Atul is our founder, CEO & editor-in-chief and, as you know, we are an independent nonprofit media organization with nearly 3,000 voices from around the world. Glenn retired as the Deputy National Intelligence Officer after more than two decades in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and is the author of an acclaimed book: The Interrogator.
Atul and Glenn posit that democracy is always delicate. On the one hand, it needs a diversity of ideas, opinions and thoughts. On the other hand, democracy needs binding glue in the form of common values, shared beliefs and widely accepted norms.
Interest groups, identity politics and short-term agendas always undermine democracies. Citizens have to be alert, educated and engaged. Otherwise, what happened in Athens and Rome many centuries ago could happen to any democracy at any point.
Singh was at Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021 where he spoke to many members of the mob. He wrote a long piece, which he refers to in this episode and which you can read here.
