The Choice Between Medical Care or Deportation

The Trump administration’s attack on immigrants has left them with a difficult choice: medical aid or deportation. As US President Donald Trump ramps up his anti-immigration rhetoric, undocumented migrants in America live in constant fear of deportation. Since Trump was inaugurated, the Department of Homeland of Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have aggressively targeted undocumented immigrants, hitting a three-year high in arrests in 2017. The Republican-controlled Congress has yet to agree upon a meaningful amendment to immigration laws, and Trump’s promise to build a border wall along the US-Mexico border has yet to materialize due to funding. With no real legislation put forth to confront the nation’s immigration crisis, Trump recently announced that he will post National Guard troops along the Mexican border. In 2011, DHS implemented a policy to protect immigrants in “sensitive locations,” which includes hospitals, schools and places of worship. These are supposedly places where no immigration enforcement activity is permitted unless there is a threat to national security or public safety. However, due to the vagueness of the list of guidelines, agents are able to easily ignore them. In this short documentary, Brave New Films examines the stories of immigrants who refrain from seeking the medical care they need out of fear of deportation.
