Dr. Mireles earned degrees in biomedical engineering from Texas A & M University, and in public health from the University of Texas Health Science Center, School of Public Health. His work experience includes clinical engineering and flight training with the U.S. Navy. His research interests are in injury and occupational epidemiology, emergency medicine, human factors and performance, and patient safety. He is widely published in injury epidemiology, clinical engineering, and public health. He is a faculty member at the Center for International Studies, University of St. Thomas. He is President of Rice University-Texas Medical Center Chapter of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. Dr. Mireles is president and CEO of Community Medical Foundation for Patient Safety, which was established in December 2003 as a nonprofit organization based in the Houston area and is a leader in patient safety research and education.
