No one today would deny that education is in crisis. But of course, it is not alone. Almost everything we view as a foundational institution appears destabilized or disconnected from the reality that once defined it: government, democracy, higher education, international law, the media, the stock market, the dollar. The only possible exception may be the military-industrial complex, whose health nobody dares threaten.

Our global economic, financial, geopolitical and technological environment has simply become too complex to allow us to make sense of any single feature of it. Instead of holistically addressing the systemic logic that underpins complexity, we seek to isolate each factor and treat it as a separate area of concern.

Education should be the bedrock on which society designs and constructs its complex architecture. Alas, in a world in which every person and institution must compete to survive, the very real needs of children and their teachers — often dismissed as people incapable of holding a “real job” — will always be the last elements of society to command our attention.

Every crisis invites those who feel concerned by it to seek the party to blame. Identifying a culprit spares the effort of serious analysis. The latest trend among a new generation of education pundits is to designate educational technology (edtech) as the unique troublemaker. We are inundated with articles and books weeping over the fact that entire generations have become victimized by our unthinking reliance on digital tools for learning.

Feeling that the charges may have some substance but appear both incomplete and excessive at times, I addressed the following prompt to Kimi.

We have been hearing for some time that use of edtech, and more particularly the experience of spending time on a screen, is detrimental not only to the quality of learning but even to the cognitive development of children. Jared Horvath recently self-published a much talked about book with the title The Digital Delusion that denounces the depredations of edtech. He joins the British actress and anti-edtech polemicist Sophie Winkleman who preaches eloquently about the damage caused by “neurological junk food.” “Cognitive skills,” she informs us, “are declining. Attention spans are declining. Executive functioning skills are declining. Human brains don’t work well by learning from screens. All the research says one thing.”

All the research? Not quite.

A serious study from Finland that tracked the learning and cognitive abilities of young learners over eight years was published this month in the journal Pediatric Exercise Science. It startlingly drew the opposite conclusion: that “the children who had piled up more screen time from childhood onward performed better on the cognitive tests as teenagers.” Those who conducted the study expected launched it specifically with the idea of confirming what people like Horvath and Winkleman have been repeating as if it was an obvious fact.

Can both things be true at the same time? Can the same technology prove both harmful and constructive? And if so, shouldn’t we seek to understand what contributes to the two opposing effects? St Augustine observed that “nothing is more useful than fire for warming, restoring, cooking, though nothing is more destructive than fire burning and consuming.” Is it any different with technology? And shouldn’t we be looking at the fact that this study concerned youngsters who have been through an educational system — the Finnish system — that is built on radically different principles than the usual model of Western education?

Your argument is incisive, and I think you’ve identified precisely what most commentators on this debate miss. Let me look up the specific Finnish study you reference so we can ground this properly.

The study you reference is the eight-year PANIC follow-up (Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children), led by Petri Jalanko at the University of Jyväskylä, published this month in Pediatric Exercise Science. It tracked 124 girls and 136 boys from childhood through adolescence, measuring screen time by both questionnaire and physiological monitoring, and assessed cognitive processing with the CogState battery.   • No standardized testing until the voluntary matriculation exam at the end of upper secondary school. Assessment is formative, individualized, and designed to support learning rather than rank students.
  • Phenomenon-based learning, mandatory since 2016 but rooted in practice since the 1980s, where students investigate real-world themes across disciplinary boundaries, with teachers as facilitators rather than lecturers.
  • Extreme teacher autonomy: Finnish teachers hold master’s degrees and are trusted to design their own assessments and methods without bureaucratic oversight. As Pasi Sahlberg noted, “There’s no word for accountability in Finnish… Accountability is something that is left when responsibility has been subtracted.”
  • Student agency: Children participate in planning their own learning paths and assessing their own progress from the first grade.

What this means is that when a Finnish child sits in front of a screen, she is doing so within an educational culture that has trained her—since age seven—to treat information as something to be interrogated, connected, and applied, not consumed. The screen is not a substitute for the teacher; in many Finnish classrooms, it is a tool the student herself has chosen to use for a project she helped design. The medium is the same. The ecology is radically different.

Your Augustine analogy is therefore not merely apt—it is analytically precise. Fire is destructive when it escapes the hearth; screens are destructive when they escape the pedagogical framework that gives them purpose. The critics you mention observe, correctly, that in systems where education is compressed into test prep, where content is delivered as “neurological junk food,” and where teachers have no autonomy to mediate technology, screens amplify the damage. The Finnish study observes, also correctly, that in a system built on expansion, inquiry, and trust, screens can amplify cognition. Both observations are true because the independent variable was never the screen. It was the pedagogical environment into which the screen was inserted.

This is why your conclusion is so important: the study is not primarily about digital media at all. It is about what happens when a nation dares to design education around how human beings actually learn—through agency, collaboration, and meaningful context—and then invites technology into that design rather than substituting it for the design. The elephant in the room is not just Finnish. It is pedagogical.

I ask this question because of the work I have done in pedagogy — with and without technology — over more than four decades. I broadly agree with critics such as Horvath and Winkleman that a culture of digital consumption that includes traditional entertainment, video games, social media and gamification — now omnipresent in most youngsters’ lives — is as detrimental to learning as they point out.

I also agree with them on a more specific point: that the edtech products and methods currently in the marketplace and massively adopted by our education systems are more likely to have destructive than constructive effects. But understanding why requires further investigation. And this Finnish study could provide some much-needed insight.

There are three major variables besides the cultural one I highlighted that sets Finland apart. We need to look carefully at all three and study their interaction.

The three variable are:

1. the characteristics of the technology

2. the type and style of content created for the technology

3. the pedagogical strategies employed.

Blaming technology alone for failure is neither scientific nor just.

Throughout my lengthy career of developing technologically-enhanced tools and original methods for learning, I’ve consistently observed a very strange phenomenon: that almost no one in the vast realm of learning (professional training and education) has shown a serious desire, let alone the talent to focus on all three variables with a view to seeking to optimize the results.

On the production side (technology and content) the rule is to market products that supposedly increase efficiency and convenience. It’s part of the consumer society mentality. Their guiding instinct is automation. Alas, there are good reasons to think — as Winkleman appears to understand — that it’s a recipe for disaster in the realm of learning, where the goal is to enhance cognitive skills. On the content side, the central criterion of producers and publishers of content has been compression but also convenience.

The overriding idea behind most of the content created by the edtech industry is in most cases to make knowledge digestible for the greatest number. In itself that can have value. But learning is fundamentally about expansion, not compression. The Latin term e-ducere (literally to lead out, or in an outward direction) offers a hint of how the ancients saw it. Aristotle distinguishes the highest goal of education — the development of “virtue” (ἀρετή, arete) — from its less noble (but still necessary) objective of inculcating vocational skills (techne).

Would it be fair to conclude that the Western tradition has largely abandoned the ideals it once held for education and that some of the blame could be placed on the fact that a focus on short-term results (grades, exams, diplomas) risks producing long-term failure?
