In order to escape forced conversion to Islam, followers of the Zoroastrian religion fled into the mountains during the 7th century Arab invasion of Persia. They founded and settled in a series of villages in the Karkas Mountains, Abyaneh being one of the last surviving ones. © Hanieh Khosroshahi
