Joy Hyvarinen is part of the working group on freedom of expression in the digital age, working on various projects, and is a member of the board of freedom of expression organization Finnish PEN, part of the PEN International network. She was previously head of advocacy at London-based freedom of expression organization Index on Censorship. Before that she led the nonprofit Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development from 2007 to 2015, focusing on sustainable development, in particular climate change, and related human rights issues. She was an Associate Fellow with Chatham House (the Royal Institute of International Affairs) from 2001 to 2007. She has served on the Board of the Verification Research, Training and Information Centre (Vertic). She speaks English, Finnish and Swedish. The views expressed here are her own.
