Barack Obama and Donald Trump take on protesters.

“If you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of ‘em, would you?”

These are the words of US presidential hopeful Donald Trump, in relation to protesters. During his election campaign, Trump has proved to be divisive along all the lines you can think of—race, gender, education, income, foreign policy, human rights. His inflammatory opinions have spilt into a massive protest at his rally in Chicago, with probably more to follow.

But if you think anyone who opposes you should be carried out of the room on a stretcher, what kind of dialogue can you begin to have in a country bitterly divided along partisan lines?

Watch President Barack Obama and Donald Trump respond to their critics for a poignant lesson in diplomacy.
