KC Cariappa

Air Marshal KC Cariappa (retired) joined the Indian Air Force in 1957 and was assigned to No. 20 Squadron, where he served for six years. In November 1963, he graduated as a Flying Instructor from the Flying Instructor School in Chennai and worked at the Pilots Training Establishment in Allahabad until the 1965 war with Pakistan began. On September 22, 1965, he was shot down while attacking enemy positions and became a Prisoner of War. He remained in captivity until January 22, 1966. He also took part in the Bangladesh War of Independence. For his bravery, he received the Vayu Sena Medal. In January 1995, the President of India awarded him the Param Vishist Seva Medal for his outstanding service to the Indian Air Force. His hobbies include trekking, fishing, and participating in wildlife and environmental activities. He was also President of the Coorg Wildlife Society for four years.
