Gustavo Leal Fernández is a professor at the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM- Xochimilco), Department of Health Care, Health and Society Area. His research interests center on population and health and the politics of health. He has been a specialist in public health and social security policy since 1979, a regular contributor to the Mexican national newspaper La Jornada, and a frequent commentator on Mexican health and pension policy. Ongoing projects include The Regionalization of Risk in Mexico, Injuries to Health and Health Care Services, and Social Security in Mexico: Toward the Universality of Insufficient Health Services? His books include Salud “Universal” en México (2017) and Acción Comunitaria en el IMSS-Bienestar: Visiones Operativas de “la Otra Historia” (2021).
