Here Are Three Ways the US Violates International Norms

By:  REBECCA GORDON

The US led the "free world" but supported dictatorships and toppled democracies during the Cold War era.

US became an outlier, acting malevolently, defying norms. Three examples illustrate its departure from the crowd.

In 2002, US established offshore prison camp at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, for "Global War on Terror" detainees.

Guantanamo: US torture and murder site. Difficult to chronicle the horrors of torture programs in other countries.

Guantanamo: 30 men held, tortured, no trial. US shows contempt for international law and its own legal system.

UN's Special Rapporteur visited Guantanamo in 2023, horrified by what she found, exposing human rights issues.

Tortured detainees at Guantanamo need urgent care. Torture is a unique crime under international law.

Ammar al-Baluchi, tortured at Guantanamo, suffers traumatic brain injury, cognitive decline, and sleep deprivation.
