This Privacy Policy applies to the Fair Observer website, activities and services, called the Services. As part of providing the Services, Fair Observer may collect, store and use personal data from your use of the Services. Specific information about what personal data is collected and how it is used is detailed below for each component of the Services. The Services are not directed at children and Fair Observer will not knowingly collect or maintain personal data from children.

This Privacy Policy does not apply to your activities on social media site pages or accounts that are associated with Fair Observer. Posting comments, replies, “likes” and sharing on these social media sites is viewable by the general public. You should review the privacy policies of the associated social media site to ensure your personal data is used in a manner that is acceptable to you.

You have certain privacy rights under laws that apply to you including rights for residents of the European Economic Area under the General Data Protection Regulation. Website Visitors

Fair Observer designed its website so you can read and enjoy the content anonymously. The Fair Observer website uses digital cookies so it can collect statistics on how many visitors come to the site, what content is viewed and for how long, and the general location of the computer network of the visitor. These statistics are collected and processed using the Google Analytics service. Fair Observer uses these aggregate statistics from website visits to help improve the content of the website and to provide regular reports to our current and future donors and funding organizations. The type of digital cookie information collected during your visit and any derived data cannot be used or combined with other information to personally identify you. Fair Observer does not use personal data collected from its website for advertising purposes or to market to you.

As a convenience to you, Fair Observer provides buttons that link to popular social media sites, called social sharing buttons, to help you share Fair Observer content and your comments and opinions about it on these social media sites. These social sharing buttons are provided by and are part of these social media sites. They may collect and use personal data as described in their respective policies. Fair Observer does not receive personal data from your use of these social sharing buttons. It is not necessary that you use these buttons to read Fair Observer content or to share on social media.

The Fair Observer website may contain links to other websites. Fair Observer is not responsible for the privacy practices of these other websites. You should review the privacy policies of these linked websites to ensure your personal data is used in a manner that is acceptable to you.

Newsletter Subscribers

Fair Observer offers subscriptions to its own newsletters. These newsletters are sent to subscribers via their electronic mail address. If you choose to receive any of the Fair Observer newsletters, you will provide your email address. By subscribing to the newsletters, you consent to the use of your email address for sending newsletters to you via that address.

To help send the newsletters, Fair Observer uses an online newsletter service. Through the use of this newsletter service, Fair Observer can store the email address for your subscription, send out the newsletters to subscribers, and gather statistics on how many newsletters are read and which website links in these newsletters are clicked on. These statistics are collected and processed using the newsletter service. Fair Observer uses these aggregate statistics from the newsletters to help improve the newsletters and to provide regular reports to our current and future donors and funding organizations. The type of information collected from newsletter subscribers and any derived data cannot be used or combined with other information to personally identify you. Fair Observer does not use personal data collected from its newsletters for advertising purposes or to market to you.

Contributors

Fair Observer offers a service for authors and creators to submit their original works for publication on the Services. When they sign up to become contributors, authors and creators provide certain personal data which includes their name and email address. Fair Observer uses this information to help verify authorship of the submitted work and to communicate with the contributor.

Fair Observer also encourages, but does not require, that contributors add any biographical details about themselves. This additional biographical information may be used by Fair Observer to compile or arrange collections of works based on a subject area, a region, a nationality, a profession, an age group or other dimension in the contributor’s additional biographical information. The general public may become aware of the author’s additional biographical information based on the collection or section of the Services where their work appears. For this reason, contributors are advised not to add additional biographical information to their contributor application that they would not want known to users of the Services. Contributors can request removal or amendment of their additional biographical information by contacting the Fair Observer Privacy Officer.

Fair Observer contributor biographies, including any contributor photos, are provided voluntarily by the contributor and are published and publicly available on the Services. Contributors may request changes to or removal of their biographies that appear on the Services at any time by contacting the Fair Observer Privacy Officer.

European Economic Area Resident Rights

If you are a resident of the European Economic Area, you have the following data protection rights:

1) Right to access, correct, update or request deletion of your personal information, by  contacting the Fair Observer Privacy Officer.

2) Right to object to processing of your personal information or ask Fair Observer to restrict processing of your personal information, by contacting the Fair Observer Privacy Officer.

3) Right to not receive marketing communications. Fair Observer does not send marketing communications, however, you can unsubscribe to any emails we send you by following the instructions within the emails or by contacting the Fair Observer Privacy Officer.

4) If Fair Observer has collected and processed your personal information with your consent, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. Withdrawing your consent does not affect the lawfulness of any processing Fair Observer conducted prior to your withdrawal, nor will it affect processing of your personal information conducted in reliance on lawful processing grounds other than consent.5

5) You have the right to complain to a data protection authority about Fair Observer’s collection and use of your personal data. For more information, please contact your local data protection authority.

Fair Observer responds to all requests received from individuals wishing to exercise their data protection rights in accordance with applicable data protection laws. We reserve the right to keep any information in our archives that we deem necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes and enforce our agreements.
