Shermin de Silva, PhD

Shermin de Silva completed her PhD at the University of Pennsylvania, studying elephant social behavior and communication.  Her current research also includes examining and addressing the conflict among farmers and elephants. She co-founded the organizations “Elephant Forest and Environment Conservation Trust” in Sri Lanka and “Trunks & Leaves” in the United States in order to facilitate research, public education, and science-based conservation of elephants and their habitat. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology at Colorado State University, where she is collaborating on research to study the behavior of African elephants in addition to that of the Asian, and the joint challenges these two species face in adjusting to human-dominated environments.
