As a cultural anthropologist who drifts into other disciplines including history, architecture, and city planning, I combined fieldwork with archival research on architectural design and city planning in the Italian colonies in North and East Africa (1869-1943) to write Moderns Abroad: Architecture, Cities, and Italian Imperialism (Routledge, 2007; winner of the 2008 International Planning History Society Book Prize). My long-term interest in Italian colonialism also produced an anthology, Italian Colonialism (co-edited with Ruth Ben-Ghiat; Palgrave, 2005). I love to travel for research, but when I’m especially lucky I also get to scuba dive.
