Derek Tonkin completed his Master’s in Modern Languages (German and French) at the University of Oxford.
He worked in the UK Diplomatic Service for more than 35 years, specializing in Southeast Asian and East European Affairs and served as an ambassador to Vietnam, Thailand and Laos.

Since 2007, he is the chairman of Network Myanmar, an organization that aims to assist the process of reconciliation and rehabilitation in the region of Myanmar.
