Martin Hill has spent two decades successfully spreading one positive idea around the world by making and disseminating his environmental art that explores the idea that ecological, social and economic sustainability can be achieved by using design principles learned from natural systems.

Through multiple forms of publishing and exhibiting his sculpture photographs have reached a wide audience internationally. Earth to Earth, a book of his sculptures, was published in 2007 and linked writings by eminent scientists, designers and business leaders with his environmental art images.

The Fine Line Project which he and Philippa Jones began in 1995 consists of 12 ephemeral sculptures made on high points connected by a symbolic line encircling the earth. It is a global art/science work in progress that explores paths to a sustainable future using nature’s design principles as a guide.

Educated in art and design in England during the 1960s, Hill has worked in London, Nairobi, Sydney and Auckland. In 1992 he realised that the world does not just have environmental problems; it has systemic design problems. Since then he has been dedicated to learning and communicating about sustainable design solutions based on a scientific understanding of how nature works.
