Jaswant Singh


Former Indian Foreign Minister, Defense Minister and Finance minister, Jaswant Singh is one of the rare few to have held top cabinet positions and served for many terms in the Parliament. He was instrumental in shepherding Indian diplomacy in the aftermath of India’s nuclear tests and many regard him as the finest Foreign Minister in India’s history. He is a recipient of many awards including the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in 2001. Educated at Mayo College in Ajmer and at the National Defence Academy, Mr. Singh served as an Indian army officer in the 1960s before embarking on a political career. An orator and a statesman, he is one of India’s most revered and respected leaders.

Jaswant Singh is particularly remembered for pushing through market reforms during his term as Finance Minister and for his handling of Indo-US relations as Foreign Minister. He is an active commentator on political life in the subcontinent and a noted writer. His book concerning Jinnah’s role during the Partition of India in 1947, which led to the formation of Pakistan, has been highly controversial.

He will be advising Fair Observer on international diplomacy, foreign policy, and issues particular to the Indian subcontinent.
