Voices of EURO 2012 - Stas Kostiwa, construction worker in Kiev
Pauline Tillmann
“I have been working at the 'Olympic Stadium' in Kiev for a few months and I actually do everything: excavate, bore, trail, dig in and paint. At the moment I am painting the steps where the benches will later be installed. I am glad that we will host the European Football Championship in Kiev in 2012. Then, many more tourists will visit the city and the economic situation in our country will improve. I would follow a match at the stadium with pleasure when it is finished someday, but I do not know whether I can afford a ticket. I earn 300 Euro a month here – this is quite a lot in comparison to other workers in the province – but a ticket costs at least 30 euro. I am originally from the province, where I would earn far less. Besides, I wouldn’t get paid for my way to work, anyway. But if I hadn’t found employment here, I would work at other construction sites. There is more than enough work on construction sites all over Ukraine because something new is being built almost everywhere.”
